Use when

You want sandbox freedom WITH a legible progression to chase.

What it is. A 2D dig-build-fight sandbox where total creative freedom sits on top of a ladder — kill a boss, unlock a tier of materials, dig deeper, get stronger, repeat. The sandbox is the verb; the boss gate is the direction.

Player fantasy / why it’s fun. You can do anything — but you always know the next thing. Terraria answers the open-world’s deadliest question (“now what?”) without ever putting a quest marker on screen. The map itself is the todo list.

Design DNA

Load-bearing structures

StructureWhy it works
Boss-gated tiersTurns a flat sandbox into a chase; every kill unlocks a shelf of new craftables. system-boss-design, system-tech-tree
Depth-as-difficultyDanger scales with a spatial axis the player already reads (down = harder). No difficulty menu needed. system-difficulty-and-dda
Biome-as-contentContent is a destination, not a level number; exploration and progression are the same act. genre-exploration, system-map-and-navigation
Dig → craft → digA visible system-crafting loop where each output makes the next input cheaper. system-resource-loops, pattern-feedback-loops
Summonable bossesPlayers choose when to advance by crafting a summon — pacing is opt-in, not forced. system-session-structure, pattern-pacing-and-tension
The gear ladderStrictly-ordered materials (copper → iron → … → hardmode ores) give an unambiguous power axis to climb. system-progression, system-build-diversity
Persistent worldOne save you keep shaping; every session builds on the last. system-save-and-checkpoint, system-collectibles
